From Aerospace Engineering to Golf Grips: The Winn Story
From Aerospace Engineering to Golf Grips: The Winn Story
1977.
That’s where the Winn story begins.
Founder Dr. Ben Huang came from an aerospace engineering background and worked on the Saturn V rocket program.
But his engineering experience eventually led him in a very different direction.
Instead of rockets, the focus became something much closer to the hands of athletes:
grip technology.
It Started With Materials
Winn began exploring polymer materials and studying the connection between athletes and their equipment.
The idea was simple:
Could better materials create a better experience in the hands?
That question became an important part of Winn’s approach to product development.
Over time, that material innovation made its way into golf grips.
And golf became one of the places where Winn continued to develop its ideas around feel, comfort, texture, size, weight, and performance.
Golf Grips Continued to Evolve
Over the decades, golf changed.
Golfers’ preferences changed.
And grip technology changed with them.
From earlier Winn designs to today’s Dri-Tac, Dri-Tac 2.0, Excel, and other grip families, Winn has continued exploring different materials, textures, sizes, and designs.
Each generation reflects a simple idea:
The grip is where the golfer connects with the club.
That connection matters.
Innovation Takes Time
Today, Winn holds more than 100 patents and trademarks worldwide.
But innovation isn’t simply about collecting patents or creating a new design.
It’s about continuing to ask questions.
What can be improved?
What can feel better?
What can make the connection between the hands and the equipment more comfortable and intuitive?
That mindset has continued from the beginning.
1977 Was the Beginning
The products have changed.
The designs have changed.
Golfers’ needs have changed.
But the approach remains familiar:
Keep studying.
Keep experimenting.
Keep improving.
1977 was the beginning.
And Winn is still moving forward.
